DENTSU ACQUIRES AEGIS MEDIA

Japanese ad marketing giant Dentsu has surprised the advertising industry by announcing a whopping £ 3.2-billion takeover of the UK media planning firm Aegis. The news comes just a few months after Dentsu ended a long-standing relationship with Publicis. The proposed acquisition will allow Dentsu to create “a new global communications network for the digital age”. The move will also pitchfork the Tokyo-based company at the helm in the Asia-Pacific region and make it the second-largest advertising agency in western Europe. Being the biggest deal ever in the 111-year-long history of the company, it will help Dentsu to make significant gains from Aegis’ fast-growing digital business and its long established European network. From an analytical perspective, by acquiring Aegis which has a good presence in the US market as well, Dentsu will be looking to grow its business in northern America but it will have to contend with American biggies like Omnicom and WPP. As a combined group with a huge potential, Dentsu and Aegis will offer integrated solutions and enhanced quality services to its clients. The combination of Dentsu and Aegis will include at least 71 out of the top 100 marketers as clients on a combined basis.

AMAZON TO LAUNCH ITS OWN SMARTPHONE

A lot is being speculated about the possible entry of Amazon into the smartphone arena. The world’s biggest online retailer is all set to join hands for an Android based platform with Chinese company Foxconn (which incidentally is also the manufacturer for Apple Inc.’s iPhone). Amazon may not possess huge chunks of money as its competitors like Apple, Google and Microsoft have for developing a business that requires plenty of patents to protect its forte. However, it has the advantage of its 100 million plus customer base. The move will ensure a better presence for Amazon in a rapidly growing smartphone market. It also enjoys a strong distribution network, which is expected to stay receptive to the new endeavour. But it will have to create relevant retailing and branding strategies to match the bar with the rest, including Facebook. The company also needs to build its assets strategically to face the core competencies of leaders like Apple and Samsung. However, learning from the earlier mistakes of its rivals and trying not not repeat them may help the company. Nevertheless, competition in the smartphone space is set to get more intense as more players join the fray.

Aviation Studies in Hindustan Group of Institutions

The Hindustan Group of Institutions has pioneered Aviation education in India. Since 1968, the Hindustan Group of Institutions has flown from one milestone to the next, creating a niche where one never existed in aviation education. In fact, its facilities were recognized as the best aviation facilities in Asia. The high flying years have seen the Institution carve a niche where none existed in Asia and grow to become a hallmark of quality, innovation and research in aviation.

The Institution’s growth was due to its belief in providing the best quality of education that was available to their students. Another aspect that Hindustan was, and is, very firm about is the relevance of the instruction they provided. They found that the skies provided employment to more than 50,000 engineers and technicians employed in the aviation industry – airlines and organizations – worldwide.

Hindustan University has signed an MOU with Korea Aerospace University to provide summer internship to Aviation Management students at Incheon International Airport and Korean Air MRO for world class exposure. The main idea of the MoU was for faculty and student exchanges to enhance cultural knowledge and research Hindustan Group of Institutions has integrated the demands of the aviation industry and has designed specialized courses.. As India leaps into becoming one of the hottest destinations for International Aviation companies, the fundamental need is to provide hands on training and education. And this is the focus of the institution.

Management Education in India

Management courses whether at an institute or online are in demand today given the boom in the economy and the increased demand for the discerning, talented and qualified new-age managers.

Management education in India is well-developed and there are a good number of institutes offering innumerable programs to cater to the rising demand for MBA degrees. One qualifies for these institutes through common entrance exams such as, CAT and subsequent GD. While CAT scores are crucial for the IIMs and Tier 1 institutes, there are also separate exams conducted by private management institutes.

Most MBA programs in premier institutes in India, offer similar foundation course packages in the first year. Specialization, projects and internships come into play in the second year. While finance, marketing and HR courses are traditionally big draws, many B-Schools today, advertise diverse academic disciplines. The aim is to create a perfect blend of ethical and commercially-viable decision-makers and managers in an increasingly interrelated world.

THE Corporate Debt Restructuring CDR PROCESS

The Corporate Debt Restructuring CDR system is a three-tiered one in India. The first is the CDR Standing Forum, which includes lender and borrower representatives. It lays down policies for the process. A core group of the standing forum takes policy decisions. The second tier is the Empowered Group, made of top bank executives, which decides on individual cases and ensures policy execution.  The third is the CDR Cell. It helps the other two tiers prepare detailed rehabilitation proposals. The first step in the process consists of considering the proposal, brought to the CDR Cell by the leader in the lending consortium or the company. The process takes about 30 days, and all lenders agree to the terms. Next, the CDR Cell scrutinises the proposal, which also can take 30 days. Then there is a review presented to the Empowered Group (90-180 days). The review considers financial parameters such as return on capital and debt service coverage. Once okayed, the case goes into restructuring mode.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Business Class

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has already become an accepted concept and practice. Many business and industrial Commercial Classes (CC) are setting apart a part of their profit for various kinds of social, cultural and charitable activities Some have also established Foundations, which undertake innumerable cultural, social, educational and similar activities. It is obvious that CSR activities give CC a sense of participation in economic and social development of the country. Their public image also goes up,which indirectly helps CC in a variety of ways. They are able to attract good talent as employees and managers. Citizens trust them, and in appreciation buy their products. The Tata Group is a standing example of outstanding contribution as CSR. Kolkata’s Connection to Dickens

It is most likely for one to overlook the close connection Kolkata has with Dickens. The South Park Street Cemetery has a story to unravel. Lieutenant Walter Landor Dickens, Charles Dickens’s son arrived in India during the 1857 Sepoy Mutiny. He served as an officer in the British army till 1864. Upon his death, he was buried at the military cemetery. Unfortunately, Dickens received the news of his son’s death on his birthday in 1864.

The grave was brought into limelight when The New York Times published an article ‘Dickens’ soldier son’ on February 18, 1911. In 1987, a few students from Jadavpur University raised funds to move the tomb stone from the military cemetery in Bhowanipore to the South Park Street Cemetery. It was placed among the columns, cupolas and obelisks that honour some prominent Europeans who died in Kolkata.

How solar power is harnessed

Solar power is harnessed through solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. A PV cell is an electronic device that receives the sun’s light and converts it into electricity. The sun’s light frees the electrons in the PV cell; these electrons carry an electric charge as they move around in the cell. This electric charge is then passed to a battery.

Solar arrays or panels contain a series of PV cells. These panels can then be installed on the roof of a house or wherever you have a high chance of collecting sunlight. The PV cells together absorb a considerable amount of sunlight that is converted into and stored as electricity that can be used for lighting, cooking and many such household activities. The best thing about solar power is that there is no by-product that harms the environment.

Personal (desktop) NGS market

Personal (desktop) Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) market

There have been more interesting developments from the established NGS technologies such as the launch of personal benchtop NGS instruments like the new MiSeq from Illumina, which generates 2-7GB of data and is a direct challenge to Ion Torrent (10MB-1GB), as well as the Roche 454 Jr (35-40MB).

These desktop sequencers require less financial commitment and usually require only one grant to fund. In contrast, the big boxes require a massive financial commitment to purchase and operate. The best analogy would be the personal computer (PC) revolution largely replacing the need for mainframes.

Microsoft’s new tab “Surface” Launch Microsoft Tablet

Microsoft’s new tab “Surface” Launch

Microsoft Corp has finally introduced its own line of tablet computers, marking a major strategic shift for the software giant in its 37-year history. The idea is clearly to take on rival Apple’s iPad and re-invent itself in a fast changing and hyper competitive technology space. Called Surface, the tablet includes a keyboard that doubles as a cover. It runs on the new Windows 8 operating system, and is scheduled to be available for the Christmas shopping season. The new software designed for Surface is the biggest overhaul of Windows in years, and features a new touch-friendly interface dubbed “Metro”. The device comes in two versions. The lighter, thinner version of the Surface tablet aimed at iPad, is built on Nvidia chip designed by ARM Holdings, and will feature Microsoft’s popular Office suite of applications. It has a 10.6 inch screen and comes in 32GB and 64GB memory sizes. The second is a heavier tablet aimed at taking on lightweight “ultrabooks”, which runs on traditional Intel chips, and comes in 64GB and 128GB models. That will be available about three months after the ARM version. The pricing details are not out yet, but Microsoft said it would be competitive. The devices will be retailed online and will be available in Microsoft’s new brick-and-mortar stores in the United States as well.

Swagath restaurant at Hotel Janpath Connaught Place review

Swagath restaurant at Hotel Janpath, Connaught Place, is one of the best places to eat in Delhi. A restaurant-cum-bar, it has an extensive menu, with an interesting section on shakahari kebabs for vegetarians. However, it is best known for its authentic south Indian seafood. It is a fine-dining restaurant that specialises in Chettinad, Malabari and Goan delicacies. I relish the crab kuzambu. It is spicy and cooked in coconut gravy. It is a Tamilian preparation with the flavour of mint, mustard, khuskhus and curry leaves.

The 7 Joys of Life by Dr. Amit Nagpal - Review by Jeevan Nair

The book begins with a chapter on self-knowledge, which is so lacking in the modern society. We are so busy learning about objects and other people; we forget to make an attempt to know ourselves. We do not know our innermost desires, our deepest passions and what gives us intense joy or grief. We are not aware of the working of our mind and emotions. Often we don't like the way we are headed, yet we refuse to do what is required-going within. We rather search for answers here and there, not even aware of the treasure called human soul.

The best thing about the book is that it simplifies the complex concepts of spirituality and makes personal growth and meditation appear joyful to the reader. The 18 contributions from 6 countries across 4 continents add to the spice and flavor. The drawback in my view is that most of the contributions are from western part of the world and more contributions from eastern part could have provided a more balance and richness to the book.

PORTRONICS LIMEBOX Technical Specifications

PORTRONICS LIMEBOX

The LimeBox smart TV box is what you need to buy if you find yourself stuck with a brand new TV that is dumb in all sense of the term. This Android-based box can make your TV smart and also link it to the Internet. It is easy to set up and needs no special skills. Setting up a wi-fi on this device is also easy. The interface is clean and easy to navigate and it has the usual Google apps like Search, Gmail and Skype. LimeBox plays any video and audio format thorough the USB . The only problem we faced was that it cannot remember the last played point of a video unless you add a bookmark. Plus, the device does not do much to increase the sound, especially if you are playing an HD file. The Internet TV section has YouTube and Metacafe apps (you can add more from Google Play). You will need a wireless keyboard to do anything serious on the browser. The remote does not have any alphabet keys and we could not find a virtual keyboard either. The games tab has angry birds, fruit ninja and fishing water already installed, but we could not play them using the remote.

LIMEBOX Technical Specifications
  • Android 2.3
  • 1.2 GHz Rockchip Processor
  • DDR3 512MB
  • 4GB NAND Flash
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n

Reviews about Nikon D800, Sony W690, Canon 1100D Cameras

Nikon D800
The DSLR with the most megapixels in the world (36.3 MP) has the potential to change photography and HD videography forever. The camera has an improved 51-point auto focus system which ensures that every pixel in the image is sharp and crisp even in low light. With the shutter speed range of 30 seconds to 1/8000 and the maximum ISO range of 6400 ‘monumental images’would not be a problem with this camera.

Sony W690
The point-and-shoot features a 16.1 MP digital camera, 10 x optical zoom and has a gyro sensor onboard. The camera offers four picture effect modes, 360 degree sweep panorama, optical steady shot and intelligent auto mode packed into a small body. Now that is handy.

Canon 1100D
The Canon 1100D is a perfect DSLR camera for those who wish to try their hand at photography while looking beyond the pocket camera. It has got a 12.2 megapixel APS-C Size CMOS sensor and captures both RAW and JPEG images. The camera has a 2.7 inch display to view pictures and comes with a EF S18-55 IS II kit lens.

The world’s most popular premium small car has rolled into town. BMW’s legendary Mini Cooper Hatch, Convertible and Countryman are now available in India through dealerships in New Delhi and Mumbai. The modern Mini is as agile as it is fashionable, all with a focus on premium quality. The Convertible, meanwhile, blends the brand’s hallmark attributes with the refreshing feeling of openair motoring. The Countryman is the only four-door Mini and features a large tailgate and a variable- use interior capable of accommodating up to five people. Despite being the first Mini with a body over four metres in length, its advanced chassis technology and Electric Power Steering ensure the ‘Go-kart’ driving experience is preserved.
