Personal (desktop) NGS market

Personal (desktop) Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) market

There have been more interesting developments from the established NGS technologies such as the launch of personal benchtop NGS instruments like the new MiSeq from Illumina, which generates 2-7GB of data and is a direct challenge to Ion Torrent (10MB-1GB), as well as the Roche 454 Jr (35-40MB).

These desktop sequencers require less financial commitment and usually require only one grant to fund. In contrast, the big boxes require a massive financial commitment to purchase and operate. The best analogy would be the personal computer (PC) revolution largely replacing the need for mainframes.

Bioprocess Market growth in India

Growth in the Bioprocess Market in India

Bioreactors market is about $15-20 million. Investments, along with outsourcing activities and exports, are key drivers for growth in the bioprocess market.

Indian bioprocess sector is one of the fastest growing knowledgebased sector and is expected to play a vital role in shaping India’s rapidly developing economy. With numerous comparative advantages in terms of research and development (R&D) facilities, knowledge, skills, and cost effectiveness, the biotechnology industry in India has immense potential to emerge as a global key player.

The Indian biotech industry grew threefold in five years to report revenues of $4 billion during 2011-12, a rise of 18 percent over the previous year, according to the tenth annual survey conducted by BioSpectrum and the Association of Biotechnology-Led Enterprises (ABLE). Of this, nearly three-fifth of the total industry’s revenues is contributed by biopharma sector alone. The industry is expected to reach $10 billion mark by 2015.

Demand for UV-Vis-NIR Spectroscopy instruments in India

UV-Vis-NIR Spectroscopy instruments demand

The demand for UV-Vis-NIR Spectroscopy instruments in India is estimated at 2,000 units per annum and is valued around $18 million.

Spectroscopy is the study of interaction between matter and radiated energy. Ultraviolet-Visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy is routinely used in analytical chemistry for the quantitative determination of different analytes such as transition metal ions, highly conjugated organic compounds and biological macromolecules. Near InfraRed (NIR) Spectroscopy is a spectroscopic method that uses the near infra red region of the electromagnetic spectrum (from around 800 nm - 2500 nm). Typical applications include pharmaceuticals, medical diagnostics, food and agrochemical quality control etc.

Today UV-Vis and UV-Vis-NIR spectrometers are used for a variety of applications. It can range from a simple purity or assay measurement to more complex applications related to biological research and material science applications. The leading manufacturers of UV-Vis and UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometers have models ranging for the micro volume (single drop) models to the large sample size spectrophotometers for silicon wafers and flat panel displays.

The current demand for UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy instruments in India is estimated at 2,000 units per annum and valued at $18 million. This includes a full range, from low-end visible spectrophotometers, spectrophotometers for water analysis to the high-end research based UV-Vis-NIR spectrohotometers and suppied by the Indian and imported brands. The UV spectroscopy market is expected to grow at 10 percent annually.

Microsoft’s new tab “Surface” Launch Microsoft Tablet

Microsoft’s new tab “Surface” Launch

Microsoft Corp has finally introduced its own line of tablet computers, marking a major strategic shift for the software giant in its 37-year history. The idea is clearly to take on rival Apple’s iPad and re-invent itself in a fast changing and hyper competitive technology space. Called Surface, the tablet includes a keyboard that doubles as a cover. It runs on the new Windows 8 operating system, and is scheduled to be available for the Christmas shopping season. The new software designed for Surface is the biggest overhaul of Windows in years, and features a new touch-friendly interface dubbed “Metro”. The device comes in two versions. The lighter, thinner version of the Surface tablet aimed at iPad, is built on Nvidia chip designed by ARM Holdings, and will feature Microsoft’s popular Office suite of applications. It has a 10.6 inch screen and comes in 32GB and 64GB memory sizes. The second is a heavier tablet aimed at taking on lightweight “ultrabooks”, which runs on traditional Intel chips, and comes in 64GB and 128GB models. That will be available about three months after the ARM version. The pricing details are not out yet, but Microsoft said it would be competitive. The devices will be retailed online and will be available in Microsoft’s new brick-and-mortar stores in the United States as well.

Swagath restaurant at Hotel Janpath Connaught Place review

Swagath restaurant at Hotel Janpath, Connaught Place, is one of the best places to eat in Delhi. A restaurant-cum-bar, it has an extensive menu, with an interesting section on shakahari kebabs for vegetarians. However, it is best known for its authentic south Indian seafood. It is a fine-dining restaurant that specialises in Chettinad, Malabari and Goan delicacies. I relish the crab kuzambu. It is spicy and cooked in coconut gravy. It is a Tamilian preparation with the flavour of mint, mustard, khuskhus and curry leaves.
